Tell Me to “Shoot for the Moon” and I’ll Shoot You

7 Jan

You know that saying, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”?

I hate it. I hate it. Usually I am a big fan of inspirational quotes typed out by 13-year-olds on pictures of sunsets so they feel better about not having a date to the 7th grade dance. But I hate that one.

First of all, it’s not even true. More accurate would be: “Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you’ll end up either careening through space or orbiting some random planet and definitely not returning home again.”

Even if we’re pretending to be intelligent and not actually taking the quote literally, it implies that there’s no such thing as failure. You’re not a winner just for trying – there are no A’s for effort in life. Talk to any of the thousands of failed actresses waitressing in LA. They didn’t land among the stars, they landed among the barely-scraping-by, no-college-degree, bleach-blonde girls hoping desperately to be future trophy wives.

So yeah, shoot for the moon. But have a backup plan.
